According to research the foods we crave as adults are most likely to be those that we associate with happy memories from our past.
My food treat is Bratwurst Sausage. I love the smell of a sizzling Brattie. It instantly transports me back to happy times growing up in Germany. Long hot summers with barbequed bratwurst and Kartoffeln salad for dinner, and snowy winters eating piping hot bratwurst standing at tall tables in the Weihnachtsmarkt.
Back in the UK the Bratwurst is not so commonplace on dinner plates or BQ’s. Now when I do come across it, its more of a treat. Many of those around me don’t quite share the same fond memories.
I guess a Bratwurst habit tends to tell a tale of who you are and where you’ve been and for many of us Army BRATS, Bratwurst was part of our childhood traditions and part of our history. Habitually you can always spot an ex-Army BRAT who spent time growing up in Germany, because they are usually the ones filling their baskets with Bratties in Aldi.
My fondness for Bratwurst is definitely partly nostalgic, but I also wonder if it’s also my desire to re-enforce my sense of belonging to the army culture I grew up in?
Anyone remember any other foods that represent Army BRAT culture? I would love to hear from you!
